Joe's carving began with a piece of firewood, which was transformed into a penguin for his daughter CIaire. Inspired to continue by a present of carving gouges and guided by library books, the standard of Joe's carving improved enabling him to win the Ron Lane Memorial Prize, a coveted regional award, with a carving of an owl. His work is diverse - wildlife, abstract, stools, traditional house-name signs and he has a particular penchant for pigs, otters, highland bulls and owls. Joe spends a great deal of time each day walking in the New Forest with his two golden retrievers. During his walks, he is constantly searching for pieces of wood or roots that have the potential to become his next piece. Typically, a carving will take two to three weeks to complete, the results are fresh and natural works, which have earned Joe local awards and rightful recognition as a highly skilled and gifted craftsman. As well as the Woodlanders, Joe is also a member of the Romsey Art Group.
