Horse & Pony Art by Claire Kitcher

Equestrian art

With all my work, the aim is always to accurately capture the character and essence of the personality that I have been commissioned to portray.

The eye is the essential spark of this which is why if I am unable to meet the animal personally, it is so important to have clear photographs.

It is said that the eye is the window to the soul, this is perfectly true in animals as much as, if not more so, than in humans.

With the spirit captured in the eye, the individual animal is then captured by close observation of bone structure, hair texture & colouring.

Having a life long association with animals, particularly horses and dogs, helps me to bring my portraits to life.

I know it sounds obvious, but it is vitally important with animal studies & especially horses, to ensure that they are anatomically correctly portrayed: i.e. "everything is in the right place" & as in life, it appears everything would actually move, joints bend, ears rotate & so on.

Over the years I have acquired quite a collection of bones & skulls, not to everyone's taste I know, but I personally find them fascinating and an invaluable aid in helping to ensure anatomical correctness in my work.

Commissions are available in graphite, watercolour, pastel or traditional oil on canvas. Every commission is completely individual & will be painted to suit you own requirements.

I will happily paint either a head portrait or full body.

Backgrounds can be a simple wash or a particular favourite scene.

Horses can be tacked or untacked, which ever is your preference.

If you would like to see a horse portait commission from start to finish, have a look at the 'As See on TV' page, which has photos from the New Forest program shown in 2003.

The program can now be seen online, but has fairly large files, so broadband is recommended.

A combination of photographs can be used to create a unique compilation painting. This can bring horses together, dogs & horses, people & horses or any composition to suit your needs.

The animals name can be let into the mount if you wish at no extra charge, or for a small fee, the name can be engraved on a brass plate.

A wide selection of frames can be supplied, but I try to avoid this if the painting is to be posted.

Many of my commissions are still received by "word of mouth" recommendations & I want you to be another totally satisfied customer.

When you have received your painting, if you are not 100% satisfied with the final result, I will gladly make any changes you require, or refund your money on return of the painting.

If you would like to know how to order your own portrait, see the Commissions & Prices page.
