Horse & Pony Art by Claire Kitcher

About artist claire kitcher

I live with my family in the village of Sway, on the southern edge of the New Forest. The forest which is now a national park, is a very special place in central southern England between the City of Southampton and the major holiday town of Bournemouth.

My love of the forest, its way of life and animals, especially the ponies, has been the main inspiration for my paintings since a very young age. I spend as much time as possible in the forest, trying to get out every day either on my pony, walking the dogs or both, taking a camera or painting equipment whenever possible.

My Work.

I enjoy working in Graphite, Watercolour, Pastels & Oils, finding each completely different to work with and that my style changes with each medium. Although being completely self taught, I have been successfully painting professionally since 1986. The majority of my work comes from pet and horse portrait commissions, but there is also demand for various New forest scenes, wildlife paintings and commercial work.

During this time, the work has certainly been varied. I have produced more than 30 designs for "Tuftops" kitchen worktop savers, painted handmade clock faces & had a stall on Lymington market for a while.

In 1999 I was invited to join the "Woodlanders", a prestigious group of professional and semiprofessional artists and now enjoy exhibiting annually with them at Burley, in the New Forest. I am also a member of Sway Painters.

I receive regular commissions to illustrate various articles for the New Forest magazine, which incidentally featured my profile in the Winter 1999 issue, much to my embarrassment. I have also appeared on local TV talking about my artwork and the forest in general.

The New Forest & Ponies

I am a practicing commoner and New Forest pony breeder under the " Brushwood" prefix. My ponies running on the forest carry my "CMK" brand.

I enjoy riding on the pony drifts (round ups), which is great fun and have competed in the Boxing day Point-to-Point several times, being lucky enough to actually win one race.

Along with my husband Steve, we created & still run the New Forest Equine Directory, a very popular Website covering all equestrian activities in central southern area. We also run the New Forest Livestock Society website for the Beaulieu Road Pony Sales www.nfls.org
